05 Jan 2012- Cape Town, South Africa- Cape Town is in line for an international gay-friendly city accolade as it competes with five other international cities for the title of the GayCities
“Best up and Coming City” in an American Airlines sponsored poll. Voting for the annual Best of GayCities poll closed yesterday.
Cape Town is competing with Buffalo in the United States, Guadalajara in Mexico, Santiago in Chile, Tel Aviv in Israel and Switzerland's Zurich.
By midday yesterday, Cape Town was still in second position in the Best Up and Coming City category behind Buffalo, with 19% of the vote.
Buffalo is western New York’s Queen City and is described as a “laid-back gay community” by the www.queerty.com website.
On Cape Town, the website says the following about the Mother City: “Think San Diego’s beaches, San Francisco’s boho culture and New Orleans’ resilience – all in a uniquely African context that’s both exotic and welcoming”.
It calls Green Point Cape Town’s main “gayborhood”. All GayCities “Best up and Coming City” winners will be announced today.
